SAIL Amsterdam

In project two, collaborating with SAIL Amsterdam under the overarching theme of the future of big events, my personal commitment to fostering a more diverse and safe environment led me to join the team tackling the challenge: “How might we bring a safe atmosphere for new demographics for SAIL Amsterdam?”

Impact & Change

Support

Being the contact person was a deliberate choice to keep things running smoothly in our large group. It was heartening to see everyone, including myself, lend a hand to other groups once our tasks were wrapped up. I also played a supportive role, offering help, and providing a calming presence when others were feeling stressed, based on the feedback.

Research & Pitching

When it comes to research and pitching, I noticed a natural connection. My enjoyment of research seemed to seamlessly link with my ability to convey insights in pitching, emphasizing the importance of embracing my strengths in both areas to contribute effectively to the team.

Design Methods Mastered

System Mapping

We started with each team operating on its designated "island," exploring causes within our respective themes and broadening our perspective to encompass various stakeholders. Subsequently, we extended our exploration further, interconnecting the different themes. This process revealed unexpected connections among seemingly disparate themes. Mastering this system mapping method proved particularly valuable as it facilitated a comprehensive consideration of stakeholders and contributed to the development of a more tangible and interconnected concept, which also helped generate ideas.

Trend analysis matrix

This matrix, encompassing macro, micro, and meso dimensions across past, present, and future timelines, was initially selected to explore the future of big events. While acknowledging its utility for other topics, we found that it did not provide the necessary flexibility for our specific group dynamics and goals. Our research and ideation process required a more tailored approach, allowing for greater adaptability and concreteness in our findings. This matrix might be more effective when dealing with topics that demand a structured and less fluid approach, emphasizing clarity and a systematic exploration of various dimensions.

Personal Development

Embracing Curiosity

During the project's kickoff, uncertainty was the norm. As a group, we found ourselves adrift without a clear direction, working but lacking a precise focus. It wasn't until the second week that we collectively discerned the area of concentration. This got me thinking about my own approach—I want to get better at asking questions when things are a bit unclear. Recognizing the importance of not hesitating to express curiosity and seeking clarity, I realized the value of better communication with clients, aiming for a more proactive and informed approach to managing expectations on both ends.

Navigating Team Dynamics

Navigating through this project, I gained valuable insights into functioning within larger teams. Witnessing the project unfold highlighted the significance of designated contact persons, both between groups and with clients. The establishment of distinct roles and tasks played a crucial role in ensuring a seamless workflow. Breaking down the overarching theme into smaller, more manageable ones allowed for a more focused approach. What truly fueled our success was the constant communication, a collaborative exchange that allowed us to build upon each other's ideas. This experience underscored that success in a larger group setting hinges on effective communication, clear roles, and a collaborative spirit.
